Partnering AHA Moments!

IPI keeps getting asked about the Best Practices for collecting Lessons Learned from your projects.  Here, we share some new ways to keep track using a Blog!

Partnering News

Lightbulb-AHA MOMENT

Have you ever been on a project and you get the sinking feeling that you have run into this same problem on other projects - but the lesson just never was "learned"? This kind of instance happens all too often on our projects!

The Collaborative Partnering model includes a Lessons Learned session at the end of each partnered project. A great way to begin sharing these lessons (so you and your people can actually learn them) is through a blog style web site!

BlogComputer

Blogs are easy to use, searchable, and simple to maintain. The best part is that you can categorize the lessons learned by topic, type of project, size of project or whatever makes the most sense for your organization. It would quickly become a great resource to your teams and new engineers. It would also be a great way for PM's to detect trends in your program so they can better steer their teams.

One thing to remember about setting up a Lessons Learned process is that...the lesson has not been learned until behavior changes. So your performance measures are also a fundamental part of your lessons learned process. For your projects, we can use scorecards. What is equally important is to measure the overall program's performance.

Important measures might include cost, schedule, claims, arbitrations, Value Engineering applications, etc.

By thinking about capturing the lessons that get learned on each project, hosting a forum for them to be shared and measuring how well behavior is changing, you will be on your way to developing the kind of changes needed for sustainable success!
